As the temperatures start to rise, it’s time to start thinking about getting your pool ready for swimming season. With a few important steps, your pool can be ready for that first dip into the clean, refreshing water.
Clean the Pool Deck Area
Possibly the most overlooked step in preparing your pool for the swim season is cleaning the area surrounding your pool. This includes cleaning up plant debris from the pool deck and nearby planting beds. Prune your trees and bushes that have grown during the cooler months, particularly those that hang over your pool.
Check Your Pool Supplies
Also, if you clean your own pool, check the expiration dates on all your pool chemical containers. If they are past expiration, they need to be properly disposed of and new products purchased. In addition, if a chemical’s container was not properly sealed during the off-season, it will need to be replaced.
Remove Your Pool Cover
If you have a pool cover, use a shop vacuum to remove any standing water from the top of the cover. This will help you avoid mixing the water on top of the cover with your pool water. After removing the cover, place it on a flat surface to thoroughly clean it according to the manufacturer’s directions.
Inspect Your Pool and It’s Equipment
After removing the cover, do a thorough inspection of your pool. Make sure to inspect the pump, filter, and lights. Also, be sure to look carefully for chips or indentations in your pool’s interior surface and on the surrounding deck and coping. Finally, remove calcium stains and scale from your pool tiles by using baking soda or a household tile cleaner along with a tile brush.
Testing Your Pool Water
Fill your pool to the proper level with a garden house. Then turn on the filter, and let it run 12-24 hours until the old and new water is mixed. Once mixed, test your water and add the appropriate chemicals. Continue running the filter for a few days and vacuuming out any debris that appears.
